  4. administrative posts until he became
  5. director-general of the French House of
  6. Rothschild 1954, and even then continued in
  7. close association with de Gaulle. In 1962 he
  8. became prime minister, but resigned after the
  9. Gaullist victory in the elections 1968, and
  10. was elected to the presidency on de Gaulle's
  11. resignation.
